I'm sure I'm not the first to notice that, but I still think it's interesting.

I can't be the only one who thinks the numbers are the time and date of the crash? First off, the crash had to happen at some time.. It'd be strange if the numbers *weren't* involved.
There are references to "Finding Nemo" (premiere may 2003), and to the Red Sox not winning the series (which they did in late october 2004). The crash must have been within this (rather large) time frame.
The plane crashed in the afternoon. This is evident in the first episode. It is light out when the crash occurs. When the pilot is found (in daylight) it's 16(!) hours since the crash. If the sun goes up at 6AM the crash was no earlier than 2 PM.
What dates/times can you arrange from the numbers? Obviously 04-08-15 16:23:42 is the easiest, and follows a simple pattern (biggest-to-smallest). Only 4 can be the year. (others are outside the time-frame) Which means 8 can only be the month. 16 can also be the day (but why break the pattern?) 23 cannot be the hour (it'd be night). 42 and 23 are equally likely for the minutes, but again: Why break the pattern?
So the simplest interpretation of these numbers as a date (4:23:42 PM, Aug 15, 2004) seems quite likely. Anyone have proof of the opposite?

We are now at 48 days, There are two groups one group with 23 that will lose 15 members by this time and the other group that had 42 and will lose 16 members this comes to 33 left and I dont know what that will tell us.

Has anyone noticed that the Dharma symbol on the door, etc. is 8 sided... and each of the 8 areas around the word Dharma is a different sequence of - and --, etc. In ancient times, especially latin america/south america short and long dashes and in certain orders represented values.

None of the guesses on the date of departure make sense if you actually go to Oceanic airlines website. It indicates that the flight left Sydney on 9/22, although it doesn' indicate the year.
Also, has anyone noticed that on that same website the flight number changes from 815 to 777?
HELLO , there something weird about flight 572? ummm, maybe like it says Giveus THE BOY "572 Giveus THE 08:00 24:00 -- BOY 08:00 24:00 --"that is the line from the website that says it, go to it yourself, read (in order) Status, Airport departure, Airport arrival. I think that flight 572 was the other plane with the drugs on it. And that is where the OTHERS came from. I knew when Bone was up there and on the radio it was the back end of the plane, someone tryed saying to me that they already found the back end and they didn't survive but that was the front end with the piolet.

If my research is correct, 108 is the number of minutes that it takes for a satalite in space to circle the Earth so it can spy on a target again. Just an interesting point. And on a side note, I think that Mr. Echo is actually a/was member of the Others.
according to the writers of lost they dont even know what the numbers mean which means there making it up as they go along. i realy hope the have a good meaning tho otherwise it will make the whole thing crap
I really enjoy the show, but the hooks are pretty broad and formulaic. The significance of the numbers is probably pretty simple so it can be applied to whatever plot twist keeps the story and ratings coming. it's like a jigsaw of the ocean: a picture all by itself would be pretty bland, but the missing pieces make the construction of the puzzle interesting.
It's like Pulp Fiction and the question of what is in the case. There's nothing in the case. There's everything in the case. If Tarantino had an exact idea of what was in the case or no idea at all- the results are the same because the audience is never told what was in the case. The case was a totem really for the film, just like the numbers of Lost. The writers probably know that no matter what "REAL" meaning they assign to the numbers it will not be as effective a tool to the story as the endless possibilities of the numbers. So, essentially, a good writer never gives the best plot points 100% meaning because once they're concrete there is no mystery, no allure. ANYTHING certain will be a disappointment in regards to the numbers.

The seating chart at oceanicair.com states that flight 815 had 42 rows and 352 seats, but the chart shows 361 seats:
First Class has 30 (5 rows x 6 seats)
Business Class has 45 (5 x 9)
Economy Class has 286 (31 x 9, and 7 seats in last row)
Is the difference of 9 seats a clue or an error?

Don't know if this has been pointed out or not but in season 1 when kate and her "boy"friend made the time capsule they buried it on Aug 15. (8 15). And the number of the safety deposit box in the bank she robbed was 815.
The best theory I've heard is that the numbers are coordinates for the island they're on. Apparently the coordinates mark some area not too far from australia. Crazy!

I've wondered if there was some numerical pattern in the sequence that would predict the next number in the sequence. I haven't figured it out, but the differences between 4 8 15 16 and 23 are respectively 4, 7, 1, and 7, which added up equal 19, which added to 23 is 42. Does this mean anything? Also the symbol with the 3 straight and three broken lines is I Ching hexagram #12 called Obstruction or Standstill and consists of the 2 trigrams Earth over Heaven. I wonder how many people are playing the lotto with these numbers?

Sounds to me like you need to work a bit on humility yourself. Humility isn't having a "lowly opinion of one's self", it means seeing yourself as you really are - strengths, talents, intelligence and weaknesses. Denying your strengths, etc. is just as much pride as doing the opposite is... As far as the numbers are concerned, we're missing the the key to their meaning. The show hasn't given it to us yet. All the coincidences - jersey numbers, seats, etc. are just the writers playing with the audience. None of those fit within the plot. Think like a mystery writer --- this is just a TV show not a new religion (or an old one). It's just for fun.

hey just wanted to post that in our class were doing religions and some buddhist beady thing has to have 108 beads on it (like a rosary) in buddhism the dharma wheel can only have either 4 or 8 posts on it. the buddha supposedly healed a SWAN that was dying of a wound from an ARROW...and i agree that maybe the ##s are the coordinates, dat and time. ps. I went to the http://www.oceanic-air.com/ site and did a "ctrl a", then right clicked and selected "copy". I then opened a word doc and did a right click and "paste". I did this on two different occasions. The first time I got a picture of Claire's boarding pass! There are numbers all over the boarding pass! The second and subsequent times I got a picture of a letter sent to Walt by his dad with a drawing of a boat and some mechanical things. Is this new or am I already behind the times? If it's new...somebody help me figure this out! Thanks.

My humble opinion is that: Do you really want to here it? … Well, these 6 numbers (4 8 15 16 23 42) are for sure means something. But the producers they don’t want to revel it because that’s the point according to them. So, they are confusing us with hundreds of different hints so we will end up lost in them. We have to keep it simple and don’t play this pointless game they want us to play. At the end when the truth about the numbers will be exposed everybody will say: “…this is it…and why the clock had the sum of the numbers 108… why the flight was 8 15 gate 23… why the first season survivors was 4 8…why the time that the plain took off was 08:04…etc” and the answer off course coming out from the laughing face of the producers will be “Yeap…hahaha”. So my friends don’t even try to understand what these numbers means because there is no clues given in both season1 and 2.
Now if you are a very big fun of LOST, and there is nothing wrong with it because is a really good sequence, I will share with you my opinion which has not been said anywhere. – Each number represents a location in the island or in the world or in space. All the locations are connected through their magnetic power. The location of each point has nothing to do with humans and all the system is not manmade. Humans are there with the role of ‘keepers’ and not with the role of ‘creators’ or ‘investigators’ or ‘scientists’. The where about of the locations and why are represented by these specific numbers is manmade just because numbers in general are manmade.
So even if the producers let’s say they have the answer we can not be sure that the answer they have now in their hands will not change in the future. It has to be an answer, which can give you the advantage (if you choose) to shoot LOST SEASON 4 and SEASON 5 and as many as possible if they still produce money. We can easily recognize this tactic from the most obvious difference from SEASON 1 & SEASON 2, which is the following: - In SEASON 1 the “monster” makes some specific sounds. These sounds if you notice them more carefully are coming from something mechanic, something manmade. In SEASON 2 we never hear these sounds again when the “monster” appears. The answer for me is very simple. When they produce SEASON 1 they did not know what kind of feedback they would have from the viewers. Simply they did not know if they are going to shot SEASON 2. So the ‘monster’ was mechanical and manmade and black smoke was coming out of its engine. It was there to create fear to any accidentally visitors to the island and it was manufacture by the DHARMA who where a scientific group trying to keep a big secret and so on. But after the huge success of the SEASON 1 these had to change and had to create a much more complex scenario. So we kick the mechanical monster and it’s sounds away and we keep only the mysterious black smoke that the monster where producing.
So my friends the scenario is something, which is dynamic and can change a lot. So if there was an answer to the numbers, then has to change because simply we don’t know for how long LOST will produce money. So the answer has to wait. So we keep the answer wide open so we can reform it as much as possible and whenever we want but for keeping the viewers busy, we through hints with numbers that we can later say that have nothing to do with the real answer. So don’t be surprised if LOST ends up like the soap opera “The Young and the Restless”.
So according to my theory (some might say that is totally stupid but is my opinion) if we wanted to have the answer we should stop watching LOST SEASON 3 and wait for it to be released in a DVD. If that was possible I am 100% sure that in the DVD of LOST SEASON 3 we would get all the answers and there would not be a SEASON 4 extending our questions. But the real question is “Do we really want LOST to finish in SEASON 3?”

the dharma symbol is the same as the chinese octagon compass, which relates to energy and time, and to the concept of change being the only constant in the universe, maybe the numbers have something to do with co-ordinates to the island shifting, and in the earlier series when the numbers had to be typed in every 108 minutes maybe that was protecting the islands failsafe, which desmond ended up using anyway. Well if your not confused already, you probably are now. Sorry!!!!!!
